As the holidays approach, we begin to ponder what our list of loved ones would dream of finding under the tree. To see their face light up with excitement at the sight of what we have worked so hard to find, would make gift-giving worth all the effort.

This reaction can be extremely difficult to achieve with some of those on our holiday gift list. Every year, we see those hard-to-buy-for relatives and friends return what we have thoughtfully wrapped up for another item. And what about those individuals who buy whatever they want, whenever they want it? They absolutely eliminate our ability to surprise them with something we are sure they would like!

For this type of individual, we must move our minds to think creatively for just the right gift. Our search must be driven to locate an item that is original, artistic and unique. No ordinary gift will suffice. There are many options when attempting to locate a gift of this nature. One such gift to be considered is a unique timepiece that not only displays the segments of time, but is also a sculpture of art.

Designer Eduardo Milieris, born in Uruguay, and trained at The School of Liberal Arts in Montevideo, creates timepieces like no other. At the foot of the Queensboro Bridge, overlooking the skyline of midtown, Manhattan, he now designs his wristwatches through his company called Watchcraft. This wearable art is inspired by the treasures he finds walking along the railroad tracks of his backyard. Each dial is hand-painted, and the remaining pieces are constructed from distressed and oxidized brass, copper, sterling silver and metal alloys.

Some of the collections include Grecian art imprints, while others contain waves of copper over sterling silver. The Montevideo collection includes a hexagon-shaped dial with imprints of old clock roman numerals on the metal bands. The Gates of Time collection is the most unique with doors that close over the dial, hiding the hand-painted artwork underneath. The doors will open with a push of a button, thus exposing the beautiful dial under the rotating hands of time.

The Watchcraft collection has already begun a celebrity following as a result of Milieris’ designs and press. The New York Post noted Bobby Cannavale, star of “Third Watch" and “100 Centre Street" to say, “The minute I saw Milieris’ watches, I knew they’d be hot, and I had to have one. Now, I’m giving them as gifts to everyone I know so they won’t steal mine."

All of Milieris’ collections except for one are limited edition. A maximum of 1,000 of each style are carefully handcrafted at the Watchcraft studio in New York City and individually numbered by Milieris. In the words of Eduardo Milieris as posted under the first clock he created at the age of fourteen, “Ars Longa, Vita Brevis." (Art lasts, life is brief.) Watchcraft timepieces are worth considering as a gift of wearable artwork that will last through generations of time.

All models from the Watchcraft collection may be worn by men or women. A collection of Watchcraft timepieces can be viewed at www.sweet-chic.net/watchcraft1.
