If you are an individual who possesses fair skin, you are most likely constantly looking for a way to achieve the golden tones for summer. Although the summer season has almost come to an end, I have found a combination that can help.

When those of us with fair skin attempt to tan, we usually try to no avail. We burn, peel, then burn, then peel, all the while, never obtaining the much sought after tan. Plus, by allowing our skin to burn, we are creating a damaging effect that we will regret in a few years. Doctors attest to seeing patients in great numbers who are in need of assistance because of skin damage. If you are fair-skinned, and you want to try the natural sun tanning process by direct sun rays or tanning bed UV rays, I advise no more than 20 minutes per day. The culprit for skin damage is hours of exposure to UV rays.

However, if you do not have the time to schedule the 20 minute tanning session per day, there is another option: sunless tanning products. I have experimented with many different products. The results of my experiences are listed below.

  1. The spray tan offered in the tanning salons is an option with some positive results. With the tanning mist, I was somewhat pleased to obtain a tan hue to my skin like never before, but there were some drawbacks. The negatives were that I was REALLY dark for a few days in the beginning, which was a little unnatural for my normal color. The tanning mist also has a definite aroma that stays with you, but just like the tan, will fade within a little less than a week. The most undesirable effect from the tanning salon mist is that your fingers and toes tell the tale. I had many lines on my fingers and toes showing that my recent tan was not natural, even though I applied the creams to my fingers and toes as suggested. This may be avoided by thoroughly washing your hands and toes immediately after the mist has been applied.
  2. Neutrogena produces a MicroMist Sunless Tanning Spray. When applied to my chest and neck area, this spray was beneficial. However, I saw blotches and lines when used on my stomach, legs and arms. I suppose the flat surface of the upper chest aids in decreasing blotches and allowing for a more even color. The MicroMist spray requires you wait only 5 minutes before getting dressed. When applying to your chest, my suggestion is to take a towel and wipe away the mist just above the armpit area before the spray can dry. I noticed a line in that area, being that my arms were in a downward position when applying the spray.
  3. Loreal manufactures a product called, Sublime Glow. In my opinion, this is one of the best sunless tanning products for the fair-skinned individual. I noticed minimal lines with the Sublime Glow. The change in hue was not largely noticeable, but created an effect great enough to hide the pasty white hue to my skin. This tanning moisturizer also leaves small flakes of gold on your skin, which in my opinion, is a desirable effect as well. Loreal recommends daily use, but I would recommend using this product every other day in order to keep a more natural looking tan. Upon using every day, I did notice some orange tones showing up. Also, my skin is very sensitive, so I did notice a slight rash on my stomach from the Sublime Glow.
Having mentioned the pros and cons to the products listed above, my best suggestion for the sunless tan is to use a combination of Neutrogena’s MicroMist Spray on the chest and neck, and the Loreal Sublime Glow for the remainder of your body. These can be found at your local Wal-Mart store. Happy Tanning!
